The 7th National Pro Bono Conference will bring together lawyers, paralegals, law students, judges, politicians, government representatives, non-profit sector leaders, academics and the public from Canada, the US and abroad to share ideas and best practices for increasing access to justice for all members of society.
Plenary and workshop participants will discuss new and different ways to identify and serve the unmet needs of people seeking timely and effective resolutions to their legal problems. Topics will include: justice system reform, supporting self-represented litigants, serving Indigenous communities, unbundled legal services, reduced rate legal services, paralegal pro bono services, the politics of access to justice, using new technologies and good corporate citizenry.
The 12 CPD hour Accessible Practice CLE stream runs concurrent to the two-day Conference agenda with shared plenaries. It offers skills and resources of particular relevance to legal practitioners seeking to provide pro bono or reduced rate legal services to people in their local communities. Subject matter experts will provide cultural competency training, and will teach soft skills such as interviewing and problem solving for clients, as well as new skills and strategies for serving people in under-served practice areas like family law and administrative law.
On the evening of October 4, 2018, Pro Bono Canada will host a full-course dinner and awards event at the Boathouse Restaurant at Kitsilano Beach in Vancouver. The dinner will bring members of the Canadian legal community together to honour a lawyer, a national law firm, a regional law firm and a community service organization for their distinguished service in the provision of pro bono legal services to the poor and disadvantaged.
